How to Breed in Cobblemon: The Ultimate Cobbreeding Guide
If you are looking for how to breed in Cobblemon, you likely already know that the base mod does not yet include a native breeding system. Fortunately, the Cobbreeding side-mod provides a seamless way to breed your favorite Pokémon using the existing Pasture Block.
This Cobblemon breeding guide will walk you through the setup, compatibility rules, and advanced inheritance mechanics to help you build your perfect team.

How to Get Started with Breeding in Cobblemon
The Cobbreeding mod extends the functionality of the Pasture Block to allow Pokémon to lay eggs. It mimics the picnic breeding style found in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
Step 1: Place a Pasture Block
The first step is to craft and place a Pasture Block in an open area. You must ensure there is enough empty space behind the block for your Pokémon to spawn and roam.
Step 2: Toggle Breeding Mode
Right-click your Pasture Block to open the interface. Look for the button in the top right corner and click it to enable breeding, as it is disabled by default.
Step 3: Add Compatible Pokémon
Put two compatible Pokémon from your PC into the Pasture Block. By default, there is a 50% chance every 10 minutes that an egg will be generated if your Pokémon are compatible.
Step 4: Collect Your Eggs
When successful, an egg will appear in the nesting area at the bottom of the Pasture Block. You can pick it up by right-clicking it or by placing a hopper underneath the block for automatic harvesting.
Breeding Compatibility Rules
To successfully breed in Cobblemon, your Pokémon must meet specific requirements. Understanding these rules is essential for any Cobblemon breeding guide.
- Opposite Genders: Two Pokémon can breed if they are of the opposite gender and share at least one Egg Group.
- Ditto Breeding: Genderless Pokémon can only breed with a Ditto. Ditto can breed with any Pokémon that is not in the "Undiscovered" egg group.
- Undiscovered Group: Pokémon in the Undiscovered egg group (such as Legendaries) cannot breed at all, even with a Ditto.
How to Hatch Eggs Faster
Once you have an egg, you must keep it in your player inventory for the hatch timer to progress. The timer will stop if the egg is placed in a chest or your PC.
You can significantly speed up this process by having a Pokémon with the Flame Body, Magma Armor, or Steam Engine ability in your party. This reduces the required hatch time by half.
Advanced Inheritance: IVs, Natures, and Abilities
Cobbreeding follows the modern inheritance rules found in the mainline Pokémon games. This allows you to pass down specific traits to your offspring.
IVs and Natures
Offspring will inherit IVs from both parents randomly. You can use the Destiny Knot and Power Items to influence which IVs are passed down. To inherit a specific Nature, ensure the parent with that nature is holding an Everstone.
Inheriting Forms and Aspects
The regional form and visual aspect are directly inherited from the mother. This includes regional variants, Magikarp jump patterns, and flower colors for Flabébé.
Ability and Hidden Ability Inheritance
If a mother has its Hidden Ability (HA), there is a 60% chance to pass it to the offspring. If the mother has a regular ability, there is a small random chance (typically 10-20%) that the baby will hatch with its Hidden Ability anyway.
Shiny Hunting with the Masuda Method
If you are looking for rare variants, Cobbreeding supports multiple shiny hunting methods that can be stacked.
- Masuda Method: This provides a default x4 shiny boost if the two parent Pokémon have different Original Trainers (OT).
- Crystal Method: This applies a shiny boost if one or both of the parents are already shiny.
- Multipliers: All enabled methods are multiplicative, meaning you can reach very high shiny odds through strategic breeding.
FAQ and Troubleshooting
Why aren't my Pokémon spawning?
Pokémon will fail to spawn if the area behind the Pasture Block is too tight. Clear some space and try again.
Do eggs hatch in chests?
No, eggs only hatch while they are in a player's inventory and the player is active.
Can I use a Mirror Herb?
Yes, if a pastured Pokémon holds a Mirror Herb, it can learn Egg Moves from its partners even if they are in different egg groups.
What happens if the area is unloaded?
The breeding process essentially pauses while the chunk is unloaded. When the chunk is reloaded, the block will check the passed time and generate up to five eggs at once.
